Going Freelance

Its been ten months now and I’m asking myself “How are things going?” This is a quick update I will do a bigger annual review.

Its been almost 10 months since my wife and I decided to take the plunge and step into the unknown by going all in on Wattle & Daub, my fledling creative studio.

Who could have predicted this year? Who could have predicted the two years prior? I don’t think there was a worse time I could have chosen to leave the safety net.

Perhaps it will end up being the reason I go back to a full time job. Thats not the case now but with a growing family it has to be a consideration.

I decided at the start that the best approach was to diversify all my income pools. Was I fully anticipating my tiny crypto holdings to explode into millions of dollars and carry my family sailing across the world like every other millennial in a carbon neutral yacht? Ok, well, it could still happen (#diamondhands ) but I knew it wasnt smart to rely on that (good thing too because every day it seems like another crypto punch in the face yeesh!)

So far the year has been a flurry of projects and work that has been some of the most satisfying mixed in with trying to figure out our new finances, insurance, church calling, youth sports, and a new baby due in a month.

Its a lot of course.

We’ve had the first couple of months where our staggered income has been a source of frustration which has prompted me to look at better billing practices.
